Medicine and Healthcare Internship

Interns work in hospitals and health clinics in Ghana where they shadow hospital staff and provide basic care and education to the community. These placements are ideal for pre-med, pre-dental, and pre-nursing students who have completed some relevant coursework and plan to pursue a career in the field. More advanced positions are available for nursing and medical students who want to acquire clinical experience.

As an intern, you’ll see first-hand the challenges facing healthcare providers in the developing countries, and your presence will provide an invaluable service to the community. Since medical internships takes more coordination to verify applicants’ qualifications and find a suitable placement, we encourage you apply early.

Health Policy Internship


The health policy placement is suited for students and recent graduates with an interest in global health to work with a reputable organizations focused on improving the lives of poor and vulnerable populations in Ghana through research, capacity building, service delivery, education and prevention programs, advocacy and policy analysis. Selected applicants will intern under the supervision of the experienced staff providing substantive and administrative support for ongoing programs in the area of reproductive and maternal health, malaria, TB, HIV AIDS. Interns will be primarily based in Accra, but may be required to travel to other regions in Ghana for assignments as necessary

Students are placement with organizations such as MSH Ghana, Catholic Relief Services, PATH, FHI 360 and Ghana Health Services.

Shadow physicians and nurses on rounds as they perform procedures and discuss individual cases, take vitals, assist with health screening
Conduct factual and field research on a range of health and policy issues
Assist in aspects of training and program mobilization
Organize and execute health screenings and other health education efforts
Draft reports and contribute to publications that are relevant to current health policy debates


Start Dates: All year, volunteers start the first Monday of every month
Duration: Minimum 4 weeks
Age: 18 years and older at the time volunteer placement begins
Qualifications: This Medicine and Healthcare internship is open to health care professionals and students studying medicine, nursing, physical therapy, dentistry, nutrition, and health sciences. The Health Policy internship is open to students from a variety of backgrounds including international relations, healthcare and health policy and pre med. A copy of your resume and a cover letter describing your interest and goals in the program are required to apply.
